Mr Barnes has more than 12 years’ experience in managing and advising agricultural investment in emerging markets globally. He established one of West Africa’s largest plantation forestry facilitating more than US$70 million in investment into the African agricultural sector and headed up WA Sandalwood Plantations as Chief Operating Officer. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business Management.
Mr Stoney has more than 50 years in agribusiness having managed numerous large-scale family-owned mixed farming businesses across Western Australia and Victoria. With cumulative knowledge and long-standing industry relationships, Mr Stoney has active interest and investments in agriculture. He is also a founding Director of an innovative renewable energy business based in Perth.
Mr McBain founded Alterra in 2008 and has raised more than $100 million for a number of agricultural projects and is experience in startups, ASX-listed companies, capital raising, investor relations and corporate compliance. Mr McBain previously held director positions at mineral exploration companies Scimitar Resources Ltd (now Cauldron Energy Ltd) and Rumble Resources Ltd, as well as grain producer, financer and marketer AACL that was on-sold to a major international grain trading company. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).
Non-Executive Director and Company Secretary
Mr Palermo is a Chartered Accountant with over 22 years’ experience in public practice and corporate accounting with areas of expertise including corporate transaction execution, strategic business management and structuring. He is a Partner of Palermo Chartered Accountants that specialises in advising corporate and HNWIs in Western Australia. He is a Board of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and is a member of the Governance Institute of Australia.
Mr McGlue is the Principal of Castle Gates Australia, a firm that advises on creating, enhancing, and protecting shareholder value in corporate transactions, capital markets positioning and shareholder actions. He a member of the Australian Takeovers Panel, and a former Chairman Australia and Senior Managing Director of FTI Consulting Strategic Communications (NYSE: FCN). He previously worked as an industrial equities’ analyst and institutional dealer with Porter Western (now Macquarie) and was later CEO of national group Australian Discount Stockbroking Limited.
Chief Operating and Technical Officer
Mr Heather has worked with more than 100 producers across 20 countries in APAC, Europe, Africa and the Americas. He is experienced in consumer-facing supply chain management, servicing UK top end retailer Waitrose and Australian fruit wholesale giant Costa Farms. Mr Heather has managed horticultural programs as well as commercial rollout strategies for genetics across numerous high value crops. He holds a Bachelor of Agribusiness Horticulture (Honours) from Curtin University of Technology with an exchange year at the University of London.
Chief Financial Officer
Mike Franklin has extensive experience in senior corporate finance as well as business improvement, and has raised more than A$3 billion over his career. He has worked across several industries including constructing and engineering for both listed and private companies in Australia. Mike possesses an expert understanding of mergers and acquisitions from both feasibility and operational perspectives, with established networks across accounting, legal and banking. Mike is a qualified Economist and Accountant, working for Kerry Packer’s Consolidated Press Holdings for several years. Most recently, Mike was CFO then CEO of Titan Australia, a subsidiary of Titan International Inc [NYSE:TWI].
Regional Development Manager
Mr Good has more than 19 years’ experience across all aspects of orchard development, farm management, post-harvest packing and produce sales. He spent 12 years with Western Australia’s second largest orchard operations, Newton Orchards, overseeing operations and market development during a significant and challenging expansion period for the near century-old family business. For over a decade, Newton Orchards has doubled its apple yields and developed direct supply relationships with Coles and Woolworths. Mr Good was previously an export development advisor for the Australian Trade Commission for agriculture, aquaculture and tourism in Western Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Agriculture Business and Management from Curtin University of Technology.
John Poynton AO

Mr Poynton is a Director of the Future Fund Board of Guardians (Australia’s sovereign wealth fund) and Crown Resorts Limited. He is also the Chair of Strike Energy Limited, Sapien Cyber Ltd and Jindalee Partners. Previously, Mr Poynton has served as Chair, Deputy Chair or Non-Executive Director of a number of ASX Listed companies, Federal Government boards, and education institutions. These include the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation, the Payments System Board of the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Business School at the University of Western Australia.
Local Execution Partners
Mr Eckersley brings extensive horticultural experience to Alterra’s execution team spanning avocados, citrus and grapes in the south west region. With a fourth-generation farming background in Harvey, Mr Eckersley owns 90 hectares of avocado and citrus orchards and is considered a highly specialised mandarin grower. He is also former Char of WA Cirtus.
The French’s Group has more than 33 years developing high performance avocado orchards in Pemberton region in Western Australia. With a fourth-generation farming background, the Group owns 150 hectares of avocado orchards ranging from one to 33 years of age. The Group brings significant local generational knowledge to Alterra’s execution team as well as downstream avocado packing and exporting experience.
